Planning of my movie poster

I have been editing this picture on adobe photoshop to use on the movie poster of my teaser trailer, so far I have edited the picture by making it darker, i believe this will get across the horror convention of my teaser trailer. I'm hoping that this paired with the stance and costume of the main character will really put across the spoof horror theme.
What i plan to do further with this poster is to add the title INSIDEOFRUS at the bottom of the poster, above the title i will plan to put in smaller writing , 'from the makers of......' and make up some previous movie names as i see this as being a popular convention of movie poster.
Considering how this looks once i've added these i may include some quotes such as 'Best spoof horror of the decade -The Times' to really make it portray a movie poster and really get across to the audience the genre of the film.
Also i believe that using conventions such at this would really pull the audiences attention into my movie poster.

Consturuction of the teaser trailer.

During the making of the teaser trailer I made many screenshots to show and portray how I was able to construct my teaser trailer, this also shows the software I was able to use and my method towards adding certain effects and aspects of the film.
This is screenshot which shows how me and my partner were able to add an underlying theme tune to our teaser trailer to add a thrilling effect to the trailer. This will then add tension and portray to the audience that this is infact a horror film as this is an expected convention of horror/spoof horror films. We was able to do this by converting a link from youtube onto adobe premier pro CS4 then placing it in audio number 4, locking this as an audio so that no videos are shown.

This is a screenshot which shows how me and my partner used a website called behapppy.me which allowed us to make an original quote which we were able to use and place in our teaser trailer. I believed this would further portray to the audience that we will be making a trailer as this is an usual convention of most trailers.

This is a screenshot which shows the finished quote that was generated by behappy.me which we have included in out trailer. We thought by using the quote being by 'the director himself' would add a sense of humour within the 'horror' trailer to further emphasise our spoof aspect.

After doing some trailer research me and my partner found that many trailers contain an audience preview screen which notifys the audience of what audiences this trailer has been approved for. I believe that this makes our trailer seem more professional and believable.

This is a screenshot which shows how we were able to add an audience preview screen before the trailer starts which shows that this trailer is able to be previewed by most audiences. This is an expected convention of a trailer and we thought by adding this would make it look more profentional. We added it by importing the picture into adobe premier pro CS4 and then dragging it down to where we edit the video clips. We then cut it to how long we wanted it to be shown for.

During the editing of our filming we decided to edit a screen which shows a 'COMING SOON' notification to emphasise that this is a trailer. We made this screen then imported it into the program we was using which was adobe premier pro CS4. We dragging it in and cut it down to the length we wanted it to be. We then added a 'fade in' and a 'fade out' effect which I think makes the trailer look more easily flowing and makes it look higher quality and more effective.

This is a screen shot which shows how we were able to import a move clip into adobe premier pro CS4 then we were able to lock it into audio so that the actual footage of the clip was unable to be seen but only the audio was able to be heard. This shows how we were able to edit the sound of the clip making the clip sound less muffled, more clear and more sharp. We also made the clip louder.

This screem shot shows the audio from the previous shot, however in this show it is showing how we were able to cut the clip down into shorter sections so that we were able to use the different sections in different parts of the trailer rather than it being a continuous chunk of voice over audio.

planning and research/ film magazine analysis

Layout-
The layout of 'Fangoria' is a cross between slightly chaotic and organised, while certain shapes or pieces of text may seem slightly out of of sync with the rest of the front cover of the magazine. Usually the layout has an organised and well balanced front cover to promote and show magazines.

Many conventional features of a magazine front cover are present, for example the masthead is located at the top of the page, above this is the slogan associated with the magazine. There are several sell-lines along the sides of the main image. This is accompanied by Anorchage text below it. A rather signifigant change from the normal convention of magazines is the 4 sub advertisements at the bottom rather than the full attention being on the main image of the front cover.

The colour scheme of 'Fangoria' utiilises conventional horror colours such as red and black to connote the genre of horror to the magazine. Typically black colouring relates to darkness and shadow, which many people hold a fear to. While red usually connotes blood and gore - again a popular feature within horror genre

A unique and very appealing feature, which i have already mentioned, of the front cover is the 4 sub-images located at the bottom of the page. These are scenes from either recent or very iconic moments of a horror film - the reason i believe this is a very good method is the incorporation of sell lines and topics which are discussed within the magazines to the images - this is very effective at gaining the attention of the reader who recognises these images and can then gather context from the sell lines above. Also, the sub-images help the reader recognise and relate to the genre of horror and the theme of the magazine. Although it does appear quite amateur it does add a level of depth.

research and planning/analysising of potential poster pictures

This is a picture that has been taken that could potnetially be used for my movie poster, i like this picture as it captures both the comedy, yet potential horror within this picture. I like this picture as with some editing it could look as though our character is possessed. I would zoom in to the eyes and use one eye as my main picture. I would try and edit something within the eye to make the character look possessed, this would contirbute to the horror but keep the comedy aspect to the picture. The lighting within this picture is ideal as it it not overly yellow from artificial light, and can be easily edited. The picture is also clear and not blurry so it would look like a professional picture.

I also like this picture as a potential movie poster as yet this also captures the comedy and horror, personally I do this this picture would be better used within my partners poster as she will be doing a portrait poster, yet i will be doing a landscape movie poster. I believe that this picture would fit in better with hers as she will be doing a spoof poster of insidious, and this fits the convention of the picture that was used within the actual movie poster.

research and planning/film poster analysis

I have chosen to analyse a landscape poster as i was thinking to use a landscape poster within the making of my poster, I thought that this would be a good example of a poster as i was intenting of using an extreme close up shot of the main characters eye which shows a difference within the eye to show a possesion of some sort within my character to give a ordinary convention of a horror film poster to let the audience know that this is indeed a horror film, even though it does contain comedy through it being a spoof.
With analysing this poster i can see the main image will need to take up most of the poster.
The text going along the front of the poster draws attention from the audience to the poster

Research and planning/ Film magazine analysis

Masthead - The masthead is normally the name of the magazine, Quite big and central for the audience to see. This magazine is a worldwide, well-known magazine so the masthead can be overlapped by the picture without it being a problem. Also by the image overlapping the masthwad this brings attention to the image on the front cover drawing the audience in.

Barcode- The barcode is put to the side, it is nothing to do with the design of the cover or story itself but is important for producing and i will need to include it within my magazine front cover as it is a normal convention of a film magazine.

Main image - the main image is central and catches the audiences eye. The model is posing in a powerful way which gives a sence of intimidation. The shot is a mid shot as his whole body is not needed, just his upper half. It has been chosen as he is the main character of the film being published, and he is shown to be standing in a position to emphasise the personality of this character.

Direct address - The image has a direct adress, the effect is trying to succed. As we can see he is looking straight into the camera this gives him a sense of empowerment to the audience but also a sense of intamacy. The image has different effects on different people, but the models way is to seduce the audience into wanting to see the film be advertised.

Sell lines - The sell lines attract the target audience, and are appropriate to the target audience. they go along with the lines of the page and give away information within the magazine, attracting buyers.

Anchorage text - This is when the text runs along with the image, as we can see the name of the film is running across the the page and characters name which all runs along the image and gives a bit of information but not enough to give away the film, so people go and watch it. A bit of advertisement is involved.

Layout - The layout of the magazine is quite formal, the lining is straight and it is orgnaised. this gives the audience a sense of seriousnes and importance.

Colour scheme - The colour scheme is simple and plain, intention is to relate to the film being advertised, this brings out the main image to the attention of the audience.

Sky line - line across the top of the page calls out to the reader and attracts attention

Slogan - slogan links to the skyline, this is because the skyline is the slogan, on the skyline we see what is included within the magazine which draws the attention of the audience.

Research and planning/ Risk assesment

Research and planning/ Font research for poster

Research and planning/ Sound research

within our teaser trailer we have decided that we will be adding some typical convential sound effects to create tension and atmosphere, we also think it would help to create comedy but also keep the thriller/horror theme and coneventions also.
(one missed call)
(scary movie)

Research and planning/ Film name ideas

as we are getting closer to filming and compsing our teaser trailer we have come up with a few name ideas, these are the following name ideas that we have so far:
  • 3 girls one tent
  • The school fair project
  • one night, one tent
  • inside-of-us
  • the not so scary movie
  • shreik

Research and planning/ distrubution companies

The distrubution is important within this stage as the film needs to be advertised and marketed effectivley, this is as if it isn't people may not be aware of the film or the audience won't be impressed by the advertising and marketing and won't want to see the film.
Distrubution companies include, warner brothers, paramount, miramax. dreamworks, summit ect...

Research and planning/ Good and bad trailers

due to the fact we will be using a lot of hand held cameras and not very many special effects, another good trailer we could produce or use conventions off could be this trailer (paranormal activity):

due to the fact we will not be using many special effects or expensive camera equipment, a movie trailer such as this (human centipede) would not be achieveable:

Research and planning/ trailer conventions

teaser trailers differ from cips of films as they have to attract the audience in and they ave to be able to sell the film to the targeted audience. Teaser trailers using include the following conventions:
  • Montage of clips from the film
  • Peaks of the film shown in the trailer
  • Voiceover or titles
  • Title of film
  • Release date
  • Actors in the film
  • Certificate
  • Studio name
  • Director

  • Here is an example of a teaser trailer film that we could make, (the blair witch project, the base inspiration for our trailer) this would be achieveable to produce as we would be able to film the majourity of it on an hand held camera:

However a trailer like this (saw) would be unrealistic to produce as many special effects are used which we would not be able to provide:

Research and Audience/ Theories of audience compared

The hypodermic model- The message within the film is directly received and accepted by the audience. Take what they need from the film.

Cultivation theory- People are more likely to believe social reality portrayed on tv.

Desensitisation- Less sensitive to violence/horror shown as seen so much in film and media.

Copycat theory- People take an idea from a film and copy it real life.

Uses and gratifications- Select messages within the film that we agree with and ignore messages that don't interest us.

after much research, we decided that our target audience for our horrow spoof will be from 15 upwards, this would allow up to appeal to a wider audience.
Due to our ceritifcate being a 15 me and my partner have decided it would have to be aired after the watershed.

research and planning/ our movie trailer pitch

This is the pitch for the planning of my horror teaser trailer

    audience research

Me and ellen conducted a questionnaire to research into our target audience to find out what they expect and enjoy from spoof trailers, our target audience will be from ages 15 and up.

scream poster analysis - task 2 (poster)

the tagline gives the audience an insight and foreshadowing into what the film is gong to be about, it indicates it is going to be scarier than any recent film, involving a lot of killing in response to their refrence to a murder. This could be percieved as being scary to the audiece, infuenced by the image of the female.
The females eyes stand out, they stand out as they look like they are looking straight at us, or straight through or behind us at something we cannot see, like we are unaware of the percieved danger. This is good as it connects with the audience to create mystery and suspence.

The hand over the womans face connects with the title furthermore, it creates suspence with the audience because it creates a sense of curiosity and fear at the fact this hand could be hers conoting to the audience that she has seen something horrific, or whether it is someone elses hand, creating an uneasy atmosphere.
the majourity of this poster is an extreme closeup of the womans face. Her eyes being evenly spread and her hand being situated over her mouth could link to the title of the film, it being called 'Scream'. it can also be used to create an atompshere of shock and fear.
This title suggests to the audience that there will be a lot of thrilling moments in the film, hence the name 'Scream'. The title connects with the key image, as she looks like she is frightened and about to scream, by having her hand over her mouth.
The mass amount of black and dark colouring of the poster fits the key conventions of a horror magazine, which i will be looking to include within my film poster.

scary movie poster analysis - analysis for task 2 (movie poster)

within this move poster straight away it is clearly conoted to the audience that 'Scary Movie' is a spoof film consisted of mocking former scary/thriller films. The informal poster in which the characters are situation within a cinema denotes to the audience that this will be not normal thriller movie. It incudes some ordinary conventions of a thriller movie poster, we can see this as a spoof/mocking cult sign is shown above the movie title, similar to which is seen in 'The Blair Witch Project'. Within the poster, a character is dressed in a 'Scream' costume, this conotes to the audience that this will be a scary movie, but how we see the character situated next to a woman on the phone and also holding a bag of popcorn, this foreshadows to the audience that however it will be a parady of a scary movie. This shows that is has tried to reflect many conventions of an 'ordinary' horror film poster
The excessive use of the colour black, as seen at the bottom of the poster, in the background and being the colour od the cloak the character of scream is wearing, and the excessive use of the colour red, as seen by the big movie title, the cinema seating and also the release date, these colours are steryotpically used within conventions or horror film posters.
Although this use of red and black are also used within bright colours such as the green dress, and lighting on the characters, this could conote and foreshadow to the audience that they are trying to mix comedy within a horror genre.

The Blair Witch Project film poster analysis - task 2 (poster)

From the effect of the picture it seems to be in a negative effect, presenting us with only black, white and grey colours. This gives a distorted reversal veiw of the forrest. This adds to the supernatural mise en scene of a forrest, seeing as forrests are ususally associated with many myths, such as werewolfs, vampires and ghosts, this effct links in with the super natural associaion as it seems very distorted, showing that it is not normal forest foreshadowing that something thrilling and outside of the ordinary may happen in this film.
And within the picture a symbol is shown above 'The Blair Witch Project' which may signify satanic, cult ideas of the movie emphasisng the horror thriller genre of the film, this is also shown many times within the trailer showing emphasis on the cult thriller genre of the film.
Also within the poster the words 'A year later their footage was found' this denotes to the audience that something supernatural may have happened to the characters within th film, already giving away sme on the story line to rope the audience in. Using this also makes the film seem like a failed doctumary giving the film mundane realism, this adds to the thriller theme of the poster and film.
Also the writing on the poster gives away background information to the audience creating a back story for the audience, some information is given but not all, or enough to creat and perfect picture, this leads the audience to create a psychopathc thriller within their minds.
when creating my movie poster i will be using some aspects of this poster as the parody we will be making will feature all conventions of scary movie spoofs but will be based around the film of 'The blair witch project'.

    brief selected

after the briefing of the many choices avaliable to pick from i came to two options that i would really enjoy completing. the two choices were the documentary, and the other being the teaser film trailer. After brainstorming ideas with my partner we came to the conclusion that doing a teaser film trailer would be more effective.
we have decided to put together a paraody of the blair witch project, thus we will be researching the blair witch project movie and also moves such as scary movie for inspriation and ideas.
from the two other tasks we will be doing a magazine front cover and a film poster for the movie.

    Guide to research

    1)      Write a definition of the term research.

The systematic investigation into and study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions.

    2)       What is primary research?

Primary research consists of a collection of original primary data. It is often undertaken after the researcher has gained some insight into the issue by reviewing secondary research or by analyzing previously collected primary data. It can be accomplished through various methods, including questionnaires and telephone interviews in market research, or experiments and direct observations in the physical sciences, amongst others.

    3)      What is secondary research?

Research that has already been conducted ad can be available from books and the
    internet

    4)      What are the six steps to producing research?

Step 1 – selecting research topic
Step 2 – define the research problem/developing approach
    Step 3 – research design
    Step 4 – collecting data
Step 5 – performing research analysis
Step 6 – report and presentation

    5)      Look at page 10(Sources of Information). can you think of another advantage of internet research with specific relevance to media studies?
